JOhn: I heard about this from my friend Betsy Block- we haven’t seen each other in 5 years and went for lunch last week. It is a very intersting story about what happened that day because it is all God at work. I was listening to a song that essentially says- how many times are you going to walk by someone in need an do nothing. God has consistenly been laying on my heart the need to serve. I have been preoccupied with work etc. Right after I heard that song I went past a restaurant and thought- I certainly would have the time to pick up food from restaurants and bring it to a shelter or pantry. I didn’t think much else about it – went to work and forgot about it. Then I went to lunch with Betsy and she was telling me about the Big Give. I told her how I wanted to serve but didn’t have that kind of time. She said- My friend John started this ministry that only takes one night a month. I asked her what it was and she said it was picking up food from restaurants and brining it to pantries. I got goosebumps…I then told Betsy about what happened to me that morning in the way to work and she got them too! I started to say how surprising that was- however I know that God had a plan for that day- and He really got my attention. So, I have emailed the person who has the Greenwood chapter- which is where I live- but wanted to contact you as well. Please let me know what I can do to help. In church tonight our Pastor mentioned how the number of people coming to our food pantry is growing- again part of the theme!

This is a quote used with permission from Latoya in Jacksonville, a Food Rescue volunteer. This is a portion of an email she sent to Kathi, our CP in J’ville. You honestly have to laugh that Carol and I made our first pick up in Indy in Nov. of 2007, when there was no such thing as Food Rescue or Food Rescue chapters. We actually have someone who has volunteered with 2 chapters in 2 states other than Indiana. We’ve only had chapters outside Indy for about 6 months. Here is her quote.
“It was an amazing exerience to know that I have helped someone eat. They gave me three bag of bread that was so heavy it was unbeliveble how much they were throwing away when there are thousand of homeless people out there starving. Food rescue is an amazing thing. They actually have it were I am from Toledo , Oh and I have volunteered there but did not know that you guys had one in J’Ville. I am so glad that you guys do have it here because it is for a great cause.

Hello All,
Recently I received an email from a woman in another state. She had not eaten anything except a can of beans in the last 2 days, and her car was on empty. Payday was in 2 days. She was having trouble making contact with local services that could help her. She asked if she could walk to a location and have some of the food we picked up. I immediately contacted our chapter president, and she contacted this woman and met her and gave her not only some food that she picked up, but also some items from her own home, and directed her to where she could receive help.
In the book of Isaiah, he asks rhetorically if our fasting and prayer is intended for us to share our food with the hungry. When brother Bob or sister Mary has a need in our family, we are pretty good at understanding and fulfilling this purpose. After all, these two are in our community. Our home. Our culture. They get our jokes. They are safe.
But it’s when God asks us to go to “”Nineveh, as He did in the case of Jonah, we sometimes find reasons why we aren’t supposed to go. Lots of those reasons are real feelings. Lots of those reasons have nobility behind them. Lots of those reasons are fear based. Lots of those reasons reflect a self preservation. No matter how noble, afraid, or protective we are, God calls every person to Nineveh at one point in time, if not often. Why?
Theres lots of reasons I suppose, but my best guess is that God is not someone who has a whole lot of interest in “concepts”, “thoughts”, or “beliefs”, if they don’t align with action. So, he graciously gives us opportunities live what we believe in a real sense. Our positive response is a celebration of our beliefs, and it represents communion with God. Our failure to act trumps our words. It’s pretty simple.
Jesus tells a story in Mathew about facing God, and while prayer, beliefs, and concepts are pillars of walking closely with God, in this instance the alignment of words and action was the central issue, with no mention of anything else. Just as John 3:16 on it’s own makes no mention of action other than belief. Ephesians 2:8-9 bends over backwards to be careful not to lean on actions too heavily, so how do we take these three scriptures and reconcile them? For me, I think that they all three represent warnings/dangers of not balancing the two. Nothing more. A warning for using your actions/goodness to impress God (or somebody else, even yourself), and a warning against misrepresenting God by laying claim to Him, with no actions that represent His heart.
Needless to say, when we begin to go to places that are uncomfortable for us as one of our chapter presidents did in this instance, we begin to balance our beliefs with actions, which is the heart of God. I am thankful that Food Rescue is feeding a lot of people, but also giving lots of opportunities for us to balance our faith with actions, and those opportunities come when we least expect it.
