Food Rescue

Posted in Uncategorized on June 24, 2008 by John Williamson

Hello Food Rescuers,

My position at my place of employment was eliminated this week, and I sent out this request to some of my closest supporters.

By now, most of you know my position was eliminated at Harbour Town this week.  I know that you are aware that my desire is to become the executive director of Food Rescue, but that requires income.  Before I accept a position I do not have a passion for, I am asking my supporters, family, and friends who know my passion for this ministry for help in funding an executive director positon.  My goal is to see if I can get 20 families or businesses to donate $100 per month, or $1,200 annually to support the ministry of Food Rescue.  Perhaps if a team of people worked together they could form 1 family unit, making the burden much smaller.  I feel confident that my business affilitates will be able to provide the rest of the funds necessary to work on the ministry full time.  If you are interested in getting a full business plan or snapshot of Food Rescue currently, please email me at jw@foodrescue.net and I will send it to you.
Thank you for your consideration, and if you do not feel led to participate or are unable to I understand.  I know God has just the right timing and plan for this ministry, and that no one person is responsible for the success or failure of the ministry.  If you feel you could become a ministry partner with Food Rescue, call me or email me to confirm.
Best Regards,
John Williamson

Another Food Rescue Story

Posted in Uncategorized on June 18, 2008 by John Williamson

My name is Brenda Williamson.  My brother-in-law is the founder of Food & Rescue.  He shared his story with the family and asked us to pray for God’s blessing on this ministry.   I work for a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities on fixed incomes (Hillcroft Services in Muncie , In) I began to see the need for food donations for Hillcroft.  I contacted our local Panera store in Muncie to see if they would be willing to donate bagels to us and they said, “Sure, what days do you want to pick up?”  It was that easy!  Hillcroft has a facility called Isanogel it’s our summer camp.  Our goal was to be able to use the bagels for camp.  We started collecting bagels in our big freezer in February.  Last week was our first week of camp and we are excited to say we have fresh bagels from Panera!

I thought to myself.. I wonder if other businesses would be willing to donate to Hillcroft?  So, I made a few phone calls to Blondie’s Cookies and Auntie Ann’s pretzels and we know pick up from them as well.  All it takes is a phone call to ask if someone is willing or able to help give back to the community. You will be surprised to find out the answer is usually Yes!

I guess Governors wait for legislators to give them ideas

Posted in Uncategorized on June 12, 2008 by John Williamson

Recently I posted on the amazing 11 year old boy who played a large roll in changing Floridas laws relating to releasing  restaurants from liability for sharing their leftover food with those in need.  Here is the response from our governors office.

Dear Mr. Williamson,

Thank you for your letter and for sharing your thoughts with the Governor. He appreciates the time you took to share your views on this subject.  In order to change the laws governing restaurants donating their food, new legislation would be required. Members of the Indiana General Assembly would need to provide backing and sponsorship of the legislation. Given your statement of support, I encourage you to also contact your local legislators to express your desire for legislation to be introduced in the General Assembly. Contact information for the Indiana House and Senate is included below.

 Thank you for your citizenship.

Another Out of State Email

“I am a single mother and would appreciate the help.”
From Jane Doe II
Food Rescue was able to contact Jane Doe II in a similar fashion to Jane Doe and offer assistance to a stranger in need.   Thanks to all of you who were faithful in the beginning and are faithful now.  Your faithfulness is inspiring people in Indianapolis IN, Greenville SC, Norfolk VA, Charlotte NC,  and Arlington TX, and has led to unforeseen opportunities to serve that seem to come up daily.  I even received an unsolicited call from an NBC affiliate in Arlington Texas this week to do a story on Food Rescue, similar to the segment that ran in Indy.  I asked them how they heard about Food Rescue and they said they “Googled” us.

Update on Jane Doe

To elaborate on Jane——————and to give God the praise!

John had forwarded Jane’s email to me, as I live in Charlotte. I am involved in a grocery outreach in the area, so I called Jane to inquire about the family needs. Since she is new to the Charlotte area, I asked if she was familiar with the location of the outreach. She lives in the same area!

What a God thing, for a Charlotte person to respond on Craig’s List to an Indianapolis outreach and then to be referred to her own community and receive help. Let me hear you sing now, “We are family, I got all my sisters in me.” Nice——————————–

Is there a need? An email from Charlotte NC

To whom it may concern…

I would be ready, willing, and able to help if I can get some of that food for my family as well.  I am in dire need of some help.  I moved here a year ago for a job, and that job unexpectedly ended.  I am starting a new job this week, but will not get paid for a few more weeks.  Food is very low in the house.  I know there are many out there worse off than myself that is why I want to help out as much as possible as well.  I am not looking for a hand out… I am willing to come and help out wherever needed.  Please let me know if I can help and if you can help me as well.

Thank you in advance,

Jane Doe (Name held back for privacy)

Will we help?   Can we make a difference in people’s  lives?  Food is being thrown away, all we have to do is commit to go get it.

Quotes and a Comment

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”.

  • Edmund Burke

“Now you see, Lone Starr, that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb”

  • Dark Helmet, Spaceballs

The Edmund Burke quote is of course very famous, and I remember laughing at the Dark Helmet line, but in the context of how much food we throw away in our country, it’s kind of hard to argue the point in that context.
